The Central Square of San Francisco was founded in 1849 by the first mayor`s order. Shops and hotels were opened in the beginning of the 20th century at Union Square, and it became one of the most populous place in the city.
Wnen several earthquakes occurred the most of the historical buildings around the square were destroyed, and free space was occupied by modern shopping centres by progressive stages. Architectural monuments are preserved here in the form of St. Francis Hotel and the Victoria Memorial which is a Corinthian column in the center of the square crowned by the sculpture of the Greek goddess Victoria.

A great place to watch people. Watch out for the bums though.

Free Wifi! (well, sometimes, when it's working, and the reception's good, and you're not being run over by pigeons)

An inviting oasis that is a perfect spot for a picnic, people watching, a leisurely stroll or to take work outdoors as there’s free Wi-Fi here.

Union Square is a haven for shoppers: look in any direction and you will see upscale department stores. Nearby, visitors can hop onto a cable car on Powell Street.
