The Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti)

Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti is known as the Spanish Steps. At the very top the stairway links the steep slope of the Pincian Hill. The idea to overcome the steep gradient dates back to 1559, however, it was fully put into practice only in 1725 at the time of Benedict XIII. It is a long stairway with a continuous sequence and a number of recesses, and is a typical representation of the monumentality of the eighteenth century. It was restored in 1995.
