It is the largest Catholic Marian church in Rome. The church is sometimes referred to as Our Lady of the Snows. It is the cradle of the Roman Christian civilization. It was built in 430 under the reign of Sixtus III in the Roman style. It is the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church retains the core of its original structure, despite several additional construction projects and damage by the earthquake. Latin rites are held here. It is registered as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
