Bois de Vincennes

The Bois de Vincennes, located in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, is the largest public park in the city. It has a total area of 995 hectares. Originally, it was a royal hunting preserve beginning from the 10th century, under the rule of Hugh Capet, the founder of the Capetian dynasty. King Philippe-Auguste enclosed the forest with a 12-kilometres long wall, and later numerous castles were built there.
Today, the Chateau de Vincennes is one of the major park`s attractions. The site served as a training centre and the headquarters of the medical services of the French military and other military detachments.
In 1854 the Emperor Louis Napoleon decided to transform the Bois de Vincennes into an English landscape garden. The park features four lakes (Daumesnil, Saint-Mandė, Minimes and Gravelle), a zoo, an arboreteum, a floral garden, a hippodrome or horse-racing track, a velodrome for bicycle races, and the campus of the French national institute of sports and physical education.
At the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, most of events took place in the Bois de Vincennes.

It was a quick visit. Just enough time for a picnic lunch on banks of the Lac de Vincennes but can certainly see the charm and beauty of this large park. Looking forward to spending more time there... read full review
