The Opéra Garnier, often referred to as the Palais Garnier, is probably the most famous opera house in the world. It was originally called the Salle des Capucines because of its location on the Boulevard des Capucines in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. The Opera House has several nearby metro stations including Opera Metro Station.
There was an attempted assassination of Emperor Napoleon III at the entrance to the Salle Le Peletier on 14 January 1858, and on 30 December 1860 he officially announced an architectural design competition for the design of the new opera house. Charles Garnier, who was only 15 years old, was one of the entrants and, finally, Garnier's project was selected.
The construction lasted 15 years due to the defeat of the Commune and the fall of the Second Empire. Great amounts were spent for construction, and some parts of the building were never completed, like the Smoking Room and the Mirror Rotunda. Gilded bronze sculptural groups were restored during the restoration of the building in 2000.
This is a multi-level building featuring stairs, elevators, corridors, ramps, rooms, spaces, 80 dressing rooms for artists, and 8 dressing rooms for orchestra and choir musicians accommodating up to two hundred people.
Today, The Opéra Garnier hosts guided tours other than performances.

A fantastic example of blended architectural types. Baroque/ Gothic. Don't forget the back and The Phantom of the Opera is a myth. They thought they were building it on a water pass-no. Easily... read full review

The Marc Chagall ceiling was so evocative I almost cried. I was in awe of the beauty of the place. My favourite building in Paris. We did not do a guided tour and I do not think it necessary. A gem... read full review

The street musicians performing at the steps of the opera are quite good.....best if you're on budget.

Великолепное здание! Обязательный пункт посещения для туристов! Жаль, что программа не такая интересная, как в Opéra Bastille.

This place is a piece of art, even without an event inside.

Come early; enjoy the building; visit the exhibits. To attend a concert here is one of the things one must do in life, at least once.
