Musée du Louvre is one of the world's largest museums and a historic monument. A central landmark of Paris, France, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement.
The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century under Philip II. The museum opened on 10 August 1793, the first anniversary of the monarchy's demise.
This is a universal museum featuring the most different holdings, collections, and famous masterpieces from many civilizations, cultures and ages. The works are stored in a 60600 square meter basement storage area. Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is among the nucleus of the Louvre's holdings.
The Louvre exhibits sculptures, objets d'art, paintings, drawings, and archaeological finds in eight curatorial departments.
Address: 99 rue de Rivoli, Paris

Opened 10 August 1793 as a public museum, but the site's history dates back to the 12th century.
