The Luxembourg garden (Jardin du Luxembourg)

The Luxembourg Garden covers over 25 hectares and is located in the Latin Quarter close to Sorbonne university and Notre Dame. Originally the royal gardens, it is very famous with tourists today. The park is kept both in Classical and Oriental styles. It was opened to public in the 17th century. Following the French Revolution, the leaders of the French Directory expanded the garden to forty hectares by confiscating the land of the neighbouring religious order of the Carthusian monks. The park features the Palais du Luxembourg, which is the seat of the Senate of France and the National Assembly; the Musée du Luxembourg; the Petit-Luxembourg palace, currently the residence of the president of the French Senate, and the central esplanade of the rue de l'Observatoire. André Gill was named curator of the Musée du Luxembourg in 1871, in which capacity he reassembled the scattered collections of art and re-established the museum of sculpture. Also, the park features stone-built théâtre des marionnettes (puppet theatre), a playground, carriage and pony rides, basketball grounds and tennis courts, and the Fountain of the Observatory, also known as the "Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde" or the "Carpeaux Fountain", with its numerous sculptures, dedicated to the kings of Europe, noblemen and artists. Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous park`s highlight.

Did you know? There is an original model of the Statue of Liberty in Paris' Jardin du Luxembourg. The statue has been in the park since 1906!

La fontaine Médicis, gelée en hiver, approche du sublime. Les 2km de tour intérieur sont parfaits pour le footing. Et lire à l'ombre de la statue de Baudelaire est un délice.

The Jardin du Luxembourg, or the Luxembourg Gardens, is the second largest public park in Paris.
