The coffee house "The Smile" combines the ambience of a tavern in the US Midwest, southern European cuisine and the comfort of French street restaurants. Recipes of local dishes are clearly inspired by the Mediterranean - the venue serves fed goat cheese in olive oil, pickled vegetables with kumquats, pasta and meat sauces under Greek or balsamic vinegar. In the mornings the coffee house serves a special breakfast menu with omelets, homemade bread and few kinds of coffees.
Despite its popularity, this coffee shop is quite hard to find by chance - the premise is in the basement and a tiny sign hangs outside, which is very easy to miss.

Comfy neighborhood cafe by morning, quick lunch spot by afternoon, scene-y hangout at night. Fresh, well-cooked food that's healthier (and tastier) than many surrounding options.

Brunch destination for models & actors makes for a sexy crowd. Exposed brick and simple menu. All on an iconic NYC street. Solid spot.

Great coffee, cute hipster staff & always a celebrity sighting. The granola is special. I sit by the window. Keep my table open. - Marc Sinoway, Hunting Season

The harissa honey-roasted chicken sandwich may be my favorite sandwich in all of New York. I could eat that every day.
