Wawel castle (Zamek Królewski na Wawelu)

The Wawel Castle with the complex of castle structures - is one of the historically and culturally significant objects of cultural heritage of Poland. The buildings are located in the city of Krakow on the left bank of the Vistula River, at an altitude of 228 meters above sea level and take their history since 1290, when the first buildings were built by Vaclav II. Throughout its history, the castle was rebuilt several times. In the XIV century The Wawel castle was reconstructed by Casimir III, and in the XV century, after the fire, Alexander Yagelon tried to rebuild the castle, but the fire destroyed its significant part. Throughout its history the Wawel complex structures had been repeatedly plundered.
In 1702, during the Great Northern War, the construction of the castle buildings was considerably destroyed by the Swedish army. After 26 years the reconstruction had began, but with the loss of Poland's independence all restoration work had been terminated, and the castle functioned as barracks for Austrian soldiers. In 1905, Poland bought back the castle from Austria and again began restoration works that continue to this day.
In the 30th year the castle became the residence of the head of Poland and some rooms and premises were used as a museum. Later, Lech Walesa awarded it with the status of a historical castle.
In April 2010, Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria were buried in the castle, who tragically died in a plane crash near Smolensk.
At the moment, the Wawel Castle with complex structures, are functioning as a museum dedicated to the Polish monarchs. The exhibition presents - the throne room, the bedroom, an armory and a treasury.

Book the da Vinci tour to see the 'lady with an ermine' while it is still at Wawel. The current exhibition enables you to see her up close and in a very calm private setting. Very special!
