Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery on two hills on the right bank of the Dnieper River.
It was founded by monk Anthony, an Orthodox monk from Esphigmenon monastery on Mount Athos, who returned to Rus' and settled in Kyiv as a missionary of monastic tradition to Kievan Rus'. He chose a cave at the Berestov Mount that overlooked the Dnieper River and a community of disciples soon grew.
Nestor the Chronicler mentioned the Near Caves already in the 11th century in the time of Yaroslav the Wise.
Today, Kyiv Pechersk Lavra features temples, monasteries, the Near and Far caves, the Seminary and the Academy, the Museum of Miniature and the tomb of famous Pyotr Stolypin, the Prime Minister of the Russian Empire.
