Tiananmen Square is may be the world’s ugliest and most forbidding public space. There is nowhere here to even get a cup of coffee, and your every move will be recorded by a forest of CCTV cameras.

I watched "the Gate of Heavenly Peace documentary" several times with regret, at last I was here with delight, spotting the history.

The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is open Tuesday-Sunday, 6:00am-12:00pm. Get there early! Also, purchasing flowers from the vendors at the entrance to place on Mao’s tomb is pretty much mandatory.

Need I say more? If you can get here early enough before the sun rises, you can witness the flag-raising ceremony
